I reduced the last heart in the stage to a three-block puzzle, only the middle block is a gol. I wonder if there are alternate solutions here.

The solution here is symmetrical in that you can do the same thing on the left that you can on the right and vice versa, but it's not necessary that you follow through on that symmetry--you just need to solve one side.

Which heart you get last is pretty optional, but you'll want one far away from the skull.

i think you mixed up the "solution" and "start of level" images for level 7-5
Unless I've been all wrong this whole time and this game is supposed to be played backwards

7-5 is the innovative backwards level, where you start the level with all the hearts and have to place them down. Naturally, you can only pull blocks in this stage.
