Favorite and least favorite video game genres?

Postby Zanreo » Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:53 am

There are lots of video game genres out there. And likely, there are some of them you tend to like better than others, while some you just don't enjoy playing no matter how good the game is. So, your opinions of different game genres!

Favorite/liked genres:
Genres I tend to really enjoy. I rarely get sick of playing these, and I tend to play them a lot... If a game goes under one of these genres, I'm likely to at least check it out. Or I just happen to like a lot of games in this genre.
Platformers: I just never get sick of these. By platformers I mean both the 2D and 3D kind, although I've played more 2D ones.
Rhythm: I just love this concept, gameplay based on the music and the rhythm of the music? I just find this really enjoyable for some reason. In general, the more "weird and wacky", the better.
Adventure games: I guess I'm starting to get into enough of these to call it a "favorite genres"? This is mainly about the "visual novel"/point-and-click-style adventures like Ace Attorney, and puzzle adventures like Layton series and Zack and Wiki.

Neutral:
Most genres go under this for me, really. These are genres where I don't really "like" or "dislike" the genre itself, but there are certain ones that stand out and that I like (or dislike).
RPGs I don't play that often, and the gameplay in itself is neither "good" or "bad", but there are a few RPG series I really like, such as Pokémon and Mario & Luigi. In general, I tend to prefer JRPGS to WRPGS, and turn-based gameplay to real-time ones (I guess I just like being able to take the time I need to think about what to do)
Fighting games I don't play too much either, and I tend to not be too good at them, but they're fun once in a while. Plus, I love Smash Bros!
Puzzle games tend to be a hit-or-miss for me, but the ones I like can get pretty addictive. (And puzzle-adventure games are great!)

Otherwise, I don't have much else to say, these are the ones I have most thoughts about I guess

Disliked genres:
Genres I tend to not like playing. At all. Some of these have a few enjoyable exceptions, but if a game goes under one of these, you can likely assume I'm not interested.

FPS: The general gameplay just doesn't appeal much to me. Actually, not a lot of first-person gameplay does... I guess I like to see my character.
Racing: I'm not really interested in cars or racing, and a lot of these games seem to appeal more to people actually interested in this. The exception are some of the more unrealistic, wacky games, like Mario Kart.
MMOs: MMORPGs, MOBAs, those kinds of games. I just can't get into them and have never really been interested. Plus, there's the thing about the "multiplayer" aspect being a huge part of it - I guess most of them have single-player options, but the multiplayer seems to be some of the point (I mean, it's in the name) and... I just don't enjoy this much? Multiplayer with friends once in a while is fun, but being dependent on interacting with other players you don't even know? No thanks. Plus, I'd feel like I have to spend lots and lots of time on the game almost every day to get "good" at it (I mean, I guess you have to spend time on most games to get good at them, but you know what I mean) and by that time I'd probably get bored and want to move on to something else. I want to play many kinds of games, not just spend a lot of time on the same damn game for months. Most of my friends that like this type of game tend to play it a lot, several hours a day, and I mean, good for them if they enjoy it, but it just wouldn't be for me. I kind of like it when games have an "end", a goal to work towards. Also, "serious" competitive multiplayer isn't really for me. (Man, that explanation was really confusing and I'm probably using some terms wrong and I might have some misconceptions about a genre I almost haven't tried, but that's the general idea I get from the games and seeing others play them...)
Sports games: I don't like sport, so why would I play games about it? Just like racing, this is mostly about the more "realistic" type of game... I liked Punch-out, for example, and I'm more willing to try a sports game if it's "unrealistic" and wacky.
Tower defense: The type of gameplay just doesn't interest me.

Nice post, Zanreo! You mention you like platformers and rhythm games, have you tried the Bit.Trip series? More specifically, Runner, but they all seem up your alley.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I have a definite favorite genre. There's good and bad stuff from everywhere, but I guess I lean towards PC Sims (City builders, Tycoon games, etc) and PC RPGs (emphasis on either consequence driven storylines or interesting combat). I'm pretty partial to beat 'em ups and more difficult platformers too. I think that about covers game genres where I might buy a game blindly.

If I have a least favorite it's probably realistic racers (though Project Cars is looking pretty rad) or fighting games. I guess I just don't have the brainpower or patience to work at a fighting game. Everything else I'm willing to try out given it looks interesting enough.

I have tried Bit.Trip, yes! Fun games, a few of them kind of lacking, but overall an enjoyable series. But the one that stood out was Runner- a rhythm-platformer? I already knew I'd like that. (And the sequel, Runner 2, was even greater... Have to 100% that sometime) On a similar note, being a rhythm-platformer was what sparked my interest in Harmoknight long before it was out (well, that and being a new non-Pokémon series from Gamefreak) Two of my favorite genres combined? Well, turns out it's a great combination!

Where's my Drill Dozer and Shockman in Harmoknight, am I right? Ha-cha!

Anyway, I mostly just like platformers. 2D or 3D, I'm there. Recently, I've been working on Mirror's Edge and the 3D Bionic Commando.

I'm not good at fighting games mostly because I never feel like putting the effort into learning it. Certainly, there's enough material out there to read to get good at Street Fighter II, but I just don't have the passion for it. What's nice about Smash Bros. is that, even if it lacks some of the depth of most fighting games, it also takes almost no learning.

On the flip side, I am learning to appreciate shmups and action adventure games. I guess I'm kinda learning how to play hack 'n slash games, too.

For genres I am awful at understanding, there's point-and-click adventure, RTS, and pretty much anything that was an 80s/90s PC mainstay. I like my games brainless.
