Depending on where you got this game, controls may be an issue.

Default control scheme goes something like this:

Movement: Arrow Keys
Strafing : < and >
Look Up/ Look Down: PgUp and PgDown
Fire Weapon: Ctrl
Run Mode: ~ (tilde)
Jump: A
Crouch: Z
Display Bindings: H
Mouse: Adventure game stuff, and RMB moves you forward.

If you bought it from GoG or Steam, you'll need to get a patch to enable key-bindings.
Some pretty clear instructions are here

What it boils down to is replacing the exe and one other file with those provided above, and navigating through a series of "Missing Text" menus to rebind. It's a hack, but it works.

I'm currently playing with the default GoG controls. We'll see how long I last! I'm doing alright so far with zero strafing or running.

I should mention, in my version, firing your weapon is mapped to the left mouse button, and the right mouse button only investigates objects. I don't think it moves you forward.

That's strange. I pulled these controls right from the manual.
I did some serious paraphrasing, though.

I just tested, and you can do those things. Moving with the right mouse button is ultra weird, but Ctrl to shoot lets you shoot when your cursor isn't red.

It's also helpful to know that the S key can be used to swap objects in the inventory. Since the 2-6 keys are used to select the first five weapons in your inventory you might find yourself unintentionally locked out of certain weapons if you don't move the ammo to the end.

I've just been using the staff, LOL. Hoard that ammo.
