What is even the battle system?

The first row of battle icons seems alright.

From left to right: melee, projectile, superpower, defense, autobattle for a turn, go to the second row.

I'm still playing with the second row.

The last one is, of course, going back to the first row. And the second to last one I think is autobattling for the rest of the fight.

It's Cheer(I forget the actual name) Beg, Bribe, Flee, and I think autobattle again.

"Cheer" gives a party member a temporary offensive boost,
Beg will do a check against an enemy's Mercy value and provides a chance for them to flee,
Bribe will do a check against an enemy's Greed value and does the same thing as beg except it costs money,
Flee will have you escape from battle, but usually at the cost of an item or some money.

You can check an enemy's Mercy, Greed, Brains, Toughness, and HP stats by double-clicking their icon during battle.

What governs when Marketoon recovers health?

Marketoon can never die, he always recovers if you do more than his max HP. He just "dies" on the next turn by running off.
