R. Hayami
This is a very common name for Japanese characters, but that's fine by me. It lets me know his first name (that didn't fit in the memory register used to store names) must be Ryu. 9/10

A. Stewart
A Stewart, you say? What a fine modern gentleman he must be! Whoops, Stewart's a girl! It's tough to fit a plot twist into a name, but that's exactly what EAD has done here. Stunning. 9/10

M. Jeter
This could be Derek Jeter's brother Mitch, but it could also be short for Monsieur Jeter ("M." is the French equivalent of "Mr."), which is how Derek was known when he used to play in Montreal. I like the multiculturalism at play here. 9/10

D. Mariner
Conceptually I like this name because it packs in a lot of character backstory. He is a man of the sea, and also probably from Seattle. Does he live in the Marine Fortress level? Only time can tell. 9/10

It's strange that there's no mention of his role in Wave Race 64.
