What games did you play in 2014?

Postby Zanreo » Wed Dec 03, 2014 11:38 am

Same thread as last year. What games did you play this year?

(Bold: Beat the game. Or it's something you can't really "beat")

Also, this is only for games I first played or properly started this year - I've also been playing some games I started last year or 2012 or whatever.

2014/late 2013 releases*:
- Child of Light (Wii U)
- Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Vita)
- Dangan Ronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Vita)
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)
- Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F2
- Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS)
- Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
- Pokémon Link Battle (3DS)
- Pokémon Omega Ruby (3DS)
- Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS)
- Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright (3DS)
- Pullblox World (Wii U)
- Shovel Knight (Wii U)
- Smash Bros. Wii U
- Tearaway (Vita)
- Tomodachi Life (3DS)
- Yoshi's New Island (3DS)

*also counting games released earlier in Japan but first released in 2014 in Europe/English version. "Late" means October-November and later, more or less.

Older games I started playing this year:
- 999: 9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors (DS)
- Anodyne (Steam)
- Bayonetta (Wii U)
- De Blob 2 (PS3)
- Fallblox (3DS)
- Go! Go! Kokopolo (DSiWare - wanted to check this one out before they removed it)
- Guacamelee (Wii U)
- Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F (PS3)
- Katamari Forever (PS3)
- Klonoa: Empire of Dreams (GBA VC)
- Me and My Katamari (PSP)
- Mighty Switch Force (Wii U)
- Mischief Makers (N64)
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3)
- Parappa the Rapper (PSP)
- Puppeteer (PS3)
- Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PS3)
- Space Channel 5 part 2 (PS3 download)
- Super Punch-Out! (SNES VC)
- Taiko no Tatsujin DS: Dororon! Yokai Daikessen!! (DS)
- Taiko no Tatsujin DS: Nanatsu no Shima no Daibouken (DS)
- Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (PS3)
- Trauma Center: Under the Knife (DS)
- Um Jammer Lammy (PS1 Classic Download)
- Vib-Ribbon (PS1 Classic Download)
- Virtue's Last Reward (3DS)

That's not counting all the Commune games.
Probably a few I forgot too...

This was also the year I got a Vita and PSP. Heh, wonder if I'm gonna keep up this "2-3 new consoles a year" trend...
Next up... Sega consoles?

Good lord! Uhhh... let me at least get started here. I started most of these games prior to 2014.

Unfinished:
Darius II
Kid Klown in Krazy Khase (not going to finish this one, either...)
Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe II
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
Star Soldier
Super Star Soldier

Finished:
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Super Bonk 2 (...didn't 1CC, but who cares)

Finished, but need the 1CC:
Final Soldier
Soldier Blade

Got the 1CC:
Star Soldier Vanishing Earth (rehearsing this so I can beat it with the red ship and no bombs)

What's a 1CC?

Anyway, seeing your post I went back and bolded the games I have already beat. Anything else is still unfinished, whoops(I have this bad habit of starting new games all the time before I go back and finish what I already started...)

1CC stands for one-credit clear. This means you don't use any continues to beat the game. Credit-feeding doesn't totally break the Star Soldier games, since they all start you back at the beginning of a stage if you continue, but it still shows a higher level of skill. I really like the Star Soldier--to the extent that I want to know them well enough to pull that off. Except the first Star Soldier, which has this cover system that makes the game frustrating.

It's weird. I get in these phases where I obsess over a particular series and bounce between all of its games. My last phase was Metroid back in 2010. Before that, maybe Space Harrier? And there were Bubsy and Rocket Knight Adventures somewhere in there. I can't remember if I've done that with anything else. I tried that with Bonk in 2011, but Bonk 3... Bonk 3. Ys: Bonks 1 & 3. (Fun fact, my avatar is a sprite edit of Bonk's giant head from Bonk 3.)

I also just noticed Sly in Time on your list. How was it? What were the overworlds like? Were the missions fun? Did it have as much variety as Sly 3, or did they scale it back any?

Cool we both played God Hand! What a special coincidence 8 years later. What did you think? I'm only like halfway through, I like the fighting engine and enemies a lot. The problem I had is that choosing your own combo doesn't seem to offer much actual depth. Like, I kinda picked one and stuck with it and outside of the basic attack functions (knockdown, guard break, etc.) it seems like options pretty much work on a linear usefulness scale. Plus the game feels a little bloated length-wise.

How bout Legend of Korra? Does it have anything cool to distinguish it from Platinum/Clover's other games? Like, if, say, I'd played them all already. It seemed from the demo that there were a LOT of enemies (like almost Dynasty Warriors level) but I didn't pick up much else.

Also Super Punch-Out and Runner 2 are both hella good games :rollercoaster

I think part of my problem with God Hand is its aesthetic quality. It is super low-budget and you can tell. That alone isn't a condemnation, it's just that part of what drives me to play a beat-em-up is the sense of gratification from performing well. Like, I can appreciate mastering a complex system, but I only really get into it when that translates into a stylish display in tune with the learned flow. I guess when I say that assigning combos doesn't seem to have "actual" depth, what I really mean is that I could tell the difference functionally, but the execution (mash square) and display (watch the enemy stagger back) ultimately felt static.

It's almost the opposite of the other Mikami game that never quite clicked with me, P.N.03. P.N.03 is super gratifying to play correctly, but feels very rigid in what is "correct". Essentially it's secretly a rhythm game.
