[1:40:28 AM] SoupEgg: http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episod ... es-mccloud this might be the worst one yet
[1:41:01 AM] Golem: this uh
[1:41:15 AM] Golem: i thought pop fiction was about rumors
[1:41:17 AM] Golem: not
[1:41:19 AM] Golem: fan fiction
[1:43:07 AM] SoupEgg: I think it was once
[1:43:14 AM] SoupEgg: times change
[12:45:30 PM] Golem: okay shinji is hard
[12:45:46 PM] Shouty: There's an easy mode
[12:46:09 PM] Golem: but would i learn the game that way
[12:46:49 PM] Shouty: I didn't learn the game until the second-to-last fight
[12:46:56 PM] Golem: oh
[12:46:57 PM] Shouty: and I played it on normal
[12:46:59 PM] Golem: how'd you beat shinji :O
[12:47:13 PM] Shouty: You know you can swap characters right?
[12:47:22 PM] Golem: oh
[12:47:42 PM] Golem: i haven't been doing that out of a sense of honor
[12:47:52 PM] Shouty: What sense of honor
[12:48:08 PM] Shouty: they all have different moves
[12:48:22 PM] Shouty: you're supposed to switch
[12:49:03 PM] Golem: you wouldn't say it's cheating to double your life bar?
[12:49:08 PM] Shouty: No
[12:49:10 PM] Shouty: they're like lives
[12:49:24 PM] Shouty: but you gotta switch at the right time before it's too late
[12:50:05 PM] Golem: i think if they were supposed to be like lives you wouldn't get the game over screen after one character died
[12:50:35 PM] Shouty: That's why you gotta switch without becoming too greedy
[12:52:35 PM] Shouty: also it gives me the sense that everyone is fighting against everyone else
[12:52:42 PM] Shouty: and not just one person is leading
[12:55:02 PM] Shouty: I'm pretty sure I learned how to switch characters before my first fight with Shinji
[1:05:04 PM] Golem: also if i had a nickel for every time i wanted to kick while walking downards
[1:05:07 PM] Golem: downwards
[2:17:19 PM] Golem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyGtl5cEjiU
[2:18:40 PM] Shouty: If you do a back attack on him while he's running towards you he'll automatically fall to the ground
[2:19:07 PM] Golem: isn't him falling to the ground the opposite of what you want
[2:19:20 PM] Golem: that drags out the fight further and gives him an invincibility window when he gets up
[2:19:23 PM] Shouty: It lets you stomp on him
[2:19:30 PM] Shouty: you can stomp on him multiple times
[2:19:47 PM] Shouty: but I guess that opportunity presents itself more if you do a jumping kick
[2:20:24 PM] Golem: the back attack is probably more reliable, since you have to commit to a jump
[2:20:41 PM] Shouty: But when you finish your jump kick, you'll be right next to him
[2:20:48 PM] Shouty: so you can do more stomps
[2:20:55 PM] Golem: oh yeah, the timing would be better
[2:22:14 PM] Golem: i did try to cheese him with all jump kicks and ground stomps and couldn't do it
[2:22:22 PM] Golem: i need something that goes faster, otherwise i mess up at some point
[2:22:29 PM] Golem: if he gets a serious combo on you it's like a quarter of your life iirc
[2:23:04 PM] Shouty: I didn't know about any of the super moves so that's all I did
[2:23:05 PM] Golem: i wish he had a health bar so we could quantify what types of hits you want to get on him
[2:25:20 PM] Golem: it also seems like shinji's guard kick (fist of the north star punch attack) is overpowered since A) it connects instantly and B) he stays in place, so he doesn't put himself in a vulnerable position
[2:25:48 PM] Shouty: You mean Riki's guard kick?
[2:26:25 PM] Golem: er
[2:26:25 PM] Golem: yes
[2:26:26 PM] Golem: thank you 8)
[2:32:14 PM] Shouty: Riki is probably the best character
[2:32:28 PM] Golem: what makes you say that :O
[2:32:34 PM] Shouty: he has the best guard back attack
[2:32:37 PM] Shouty: and best guard kick
[2:32:47 PM] Golem: oh yeah
[2:32:53 PM] Golem: his guard back attack has one hell of a range
[2:33:49 PM] Shouty: but I think he's the slowest character
[2:34:36 PM] Golem: it's kinda subtle between him and kunio?
[2:34:40 PM] Shouty: Yeah
[2:34:43 PM] Golem: just playing casually, they seemed identicaly
[2:34:44 PM] Golem: er
[2:34:46 PM] Golem: identical
[2:35:06 PM] Golem: but after dying to shinji a million times, i found that riki's kicks were usually more effective
[2:35:25 PM] Golem: gave shinji more stun time and let me go into a block more regularly
[2:35:41 PM] Golem: maybe that was me getting better, maybe that was a subtle difference between kunio and riki
[2:52:41 PM] Shouty: I just realized that the cutscenes where they show Misako walking faster than the boys is supposed to demonstrate her speed

i am just not seeing how you got the idea that you're not supposed to switch characters

there's a "switch character" button

you could also say jump-kicks are OP'd so the developers probably intended you not to jump, but then again, there's that jump button staring at me

as for "but you get a game over if one character dies", dunno, that makes sense to me - if one of your friends died while fighting to free your high school (or whatever), i think you'd count that as a loss. it makes it more challenging than just having a quadruple life bar because as shouty said you get punished for getting greedy

Renegade and Double Dragon refilled your health at the end of each round, so a fundamental element of the combat was exchanging blows and wagering how much damage you could survive against how much you could deal. That's kinda the beauty of enemies with move-sets exactly matched to yours. The games aren't made for no-hit playthroughs - part of what makes them so gritty and visceral is that you take a lot of punches. It's somewhat expected that SNK would follow the same pattern, and I simply can't see any way to play with only one character that doesn't involve heavily abusing the block and jump-kick and perfecting your reflexes to a painful degree. You don't *have* to do that - you can just swap characters - so why not get your hands a little dirty? My fight with Shinji was pretty brutal - I ran down almost all four characters' health - but I got in some big satisfying combos and didn't suffer from the endless chipping hell you're describing.
